Mitolo Family Farms Safety Month Roadshow
Last week, Karen Maher swapped high heels for safety boots and hit the road across regional South Australia, delivering a Safety Month keynote roadshow for the team at Mitolo Family Farms.
Three farms. Multiple sessions. One clear focus: building strong safety cultures that protect both physical and psychosocial wellbeing.
From frontline workers to site leaders, the conversations were practical, grounded and honest — exactly what real safety leadership requires.
Safety Is Safety. Full Stop.
Karen’s background as an employment and WHS lawyer and investigator includes working on serious physical incident cases, workplace fatalities and complex psychosocial matters across Australia and the UK.
At Mitolo, that experience translated into sessions focused on:
- Strengthening everyday safety leadership behaviours
- Linking physical WHS and psychosocial risk management
- Building speak up cultures on farms and in regional settings
- Shared accountability — because safety is everyone’s job
In high-risk environments like agriculture, culture shows up fast.
In toolbox talks.
In how hazards are reported.
In whether someone speaks up — or stays silent.
Strong safety cultures don’t happen by accident. They are built, reinforced and lived daily.
A big thank you to Andrew Giles and Ben Poole for being outstanding hosts, and to the Mitolo Family Farms team for the energy, ideas and meaningful conversations throughout the roadshow.
And yes — the Steel Blues may have converted her for life.
